Got water? Thank Shoal Lake No. 40. Panel Discussion

Date: Monday - March 28, 2016
Time: 11:00 AM
Location: U of M - 210 University Centre, (Killarney room)

The United Nations recognizes the human right to water and sanitation, as “clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights”. That Shoal Lake No. 40, an indigenous community, is deprived of safe drinking water, as well an access road, garbage disposal and wastewater treatment, is a human rights violation. This community is at the other end of the water pipe from your home in Winnipeg and all our institutions. More than a Freedom Road is needed when this community lacks clean water. Students, faculty, and the general public are invited to this free program to come and learn. Be part of a movement to ensure that Winnipeg is no longer considered the most racist city in Canada.

Panel Speakers:

• Daryl Redsky, Consultation Officer, Shoal Lake 40.

• Samantha Redsky, Representative to the UN, Geneva for Shoal Lake No. 40.

• Cuyler Cotton, Policy Analyst, Shoal Lake No. 40.

• Dave Angus, President and CEO, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.

• MC/Discussants Eduardo Da Costa/Shirley Thompson

NOTE: A day trip is being planned for April 22nd at 8:00 a.m. to Shoal Lake No. 40 to coincide with the Canadian Human Rights Museum visit. Come participate and be part of positive learning and change (sign up and payment required).

Freedom of Movement: Exploring a Path from Armed Conflict, Persecution, and Forced Migration to Conflict Resolution, Human Rights, and Development

CARFMS 2016 will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, hosted by the Conflict Resolution Studies and International Development Studies departments of Menno Simons College. Menno Simons is a college of Canadian Mennonite University and affiliated with the University of Winnipeg.

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 13) states that everyone has the right to freedom of movement within and across borders. Today, unprecedented numbers of people are being denied this fundamental freedom. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated in its 2014 Global Trends Report that war, conflict, and persecution have displaced some 60 million people worldwide, the highest number on record. New waves of “boat people,” displaced by violence, are crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and entire oceans to seek safety and freedom only to perish on dangerous journeys or be detained or refused entry at their destination. This is an opportune time to highlight and discuss the humanitarian crises triggered by forced migration, exchange research knowledge and practical expertise, and propose concrete actions that will restore the right to free and safe movement for all peoples.

The 9th Annual CARFMS Conference will provide a forum to explore the question: How can host states, origin states, the international community, private citizens and civil society act to address the escalating global crises triggered by forced migration? Building on the strengths of Menno Simons College, the event will bring together academics, researchers, students, government officials, lawyers and lawmakers, community organizations and practitioners to explore and recommend theories, policies and practical responses relating to “Freedom of Movement” from the following perspectives: (1) Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding; (2) Human Rights; (3) Development; and (4) Methodology and Knowledge Production.

Through programmed sessions, local field trips and activities, and networking opportunities, the conference will mobilize knowledge and increase access to innovative and interdisciplinary research on refugees, forced migrants, and resettlement. Three keynote addresses, open to the public, will be delivered by prominent speakers, and three plenary sessions will feature additional leaders, scholars and practitioners who are directly involved with refugee and forced migrant work. The conference will also include individual papers, organized panels and roundtables, film screenings, video documentaries, news media and poster/photo exhibits.

Peace Blossoms

Date: Saturday - September 10 to Sunday - September 11, 2016
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: Canadian Museum for Human Rights, The Forks, 85 Israel Asper Way, Winnipeg, Mb Garden of Contemplation

A family-friendly art activity celebrating Peace Days
September 21 is the International Day of Peace. Each year on this day, people around the world unite to reflect on the roles that kindness, compassion, and harmony play in the building of a more inclusive world.

This year, the Museum is exploring the important role that peace plays in the protection of children. Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the atomic bomb fell on her home city of Nagasaki. She soon developed cancer from the radiation she was exposed to. While receiving treatment in the hospital years later, she heard of an ancient Japanese legend that claims anyone capable of folding one thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish. Eager to survive and experience a more peaceful world, Sadako immediately set to work. She eventually made over 1300 origami cranes before passing away at the age of 12 from leukemia. Today, Sadako’s story has become a global inspiration for children who wish to live in peace and harmony.

In honour of Sadako and the millions of other children affected by war, join us in the beautiful Garden of Contemplation for Peace Blossoms, a family-friendly art activity celebrating Peace Days. Look at our beautiful peace lilies and learn how to make your own out of origami paper. Express what peace means to you by writing a message on your lily, and then placing it in one of our tranquil ponds of water. Join in the conversation on the meaning of peace by reading messages written on other lilies.

Self-Compassion and Emotional Resilience with Dr. Kristin Neff

Date: Friday - September 16, 2016
Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Niakwa Country Club, 620, chemin Niakwa, Winnipeg, Manitoba

About the workshop

Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves, selfcompassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater ease. Through discussion, meditation, and experiential exercises, you will gain practical skills for responding in a kind, compassionate way whenever you are experiencing painful emotions.

Dr. Kristin Neff, PhD Associate Professor of Human Development and Culture at the University of Texas at Austin, researcher, and author. A pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, she conducted the first empirical studies on the subject over a decade ago, and co-created an 8-week training course in self-compassion with Dr. Chris Germer.

Registration: $225

Who should attend?

This workshop is open to all, and will be of interest to all health and human service providers, as well as the general public.

A Professional Development Opportunity
Theme: Art, Community Engagement, and Peace Building

September 16, 2016, 10 am-2.30 pm

St Paul’s College, University of Manitoba
Rotary-sponsored Peace Days, held annually and now in its seventh year, will host a Professional Development Training Workshop on September 16th, from 10 am to 2.30 pm. If you are one of the service providers, or settlement staff; or if you work on the front lines with newcomers, indigenous peoples, youth, other vulnerable groups, or indeed with other community stakeholders, this workshop is for you.

We invite you to participate, share your experiences, and learn from others. This workshop is free, and its goal is to explore the role `the arts’ could play in the work you do, and indeed how you can incorporate `creative play’ in many forms into your programming.

The theme for Peace Days 2016 is Seeds of Hope. The pre-lunch session will involve workshops with three different artists who will share how they use their art practice to build community networks and address social issues. The artists will help you explore how art practices like theater, storytelling, clowning and writing can support community building. The afternoon will be a facilitated discussion that will demonstrate interactive strategies and tools that you may use to incorporate the arts into your specific context and organization. A working lunch will be provided.

One of the featured artists is Darcy Ataman from Make Music Matter who's mission is to engage, educate and foster the vulnerable populations living in African communities affected by extreme poverty through music and socially conscious art creating future community leaders.

Join us for a workshop using music to explain the process, context and outcomes of MMM's work in African communities such as the Democractic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Teilhard de Chardin claimed that human persons are the arrow of evolution. Our choices impact the direction of evolution. What does being a “cocreator” mean in an evolutionary universe? We will explore this question from the Christian perspective in an unfinished universe, one that is being drawn into a new future.

Face2Face | Journey to Renewed Covenants

Date: Friday - September 23, 2016
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Laudamus Auditorium, Canadian Mennonite University 500 Shaftesbury Blvd. Winnipeg, Mb

Join us for the Manitoba Screening of ‘Reserve 107’ with Brad Leitch (Director), followed by panel and audience conversation.

Panelists:

  • Barb and Wilmer Froese of Laird, SK
  • Ray Funk of Prince Albert, SK
  • Chief George Kingfisher, hereditary chief of the Young Chippewayan First Nation
  • Brad Leitch

Indigenous rights and title to the land remain a taboo topic for many across Canada, but in the small town of Laird, SK, an old injustice is providing new opportunities for dialogue, friendship and a fierce determination to right the wrongs of the past. In 2006, 130 years after the signing of Treaty 6, Mennonites, Lutherans, and the Young Chippewayan First Nation gathered on the sacred hill of Stoney Knoll / Opwashemoe Chakatinaw located in Laird where, with goodwill and shared goals, they signed a memorandum of understanding. ‘Reserve 107’ captures the spirit of these renewed relationships.

At the closing ceremony of Vancouver’s DOXA Documentary Film Festival the jury stated “’Reserve 107’ spoke exceptionally well to our generation. We have grown up learning about indigenous affairs and the value of righting the foundation of our friendship. Through only 32 minutes we are shown two groups of people speaking at solutions and actually acting on them together, capturing the raw passion for structural change in a respectful and educated manner is one of the many reasons as to why this film has earned honourable mention for the Nigel Moore Award."

At this Face2Face opportunity come explore the meaning, relevance and power Treaties signed over 100 years ago still have today. Consider more deeply, in a time of ‘truth and reconciliation’, how opportunities for renewed understanding, humility and respect might lead us to new covenants and mutual healing.

Wednesday, Sept 28: The Mauro Centre welcomes Nobel Peace Laureate and 2-time President of Costa Rica, Dr. Oscar Arias to the University of Manitoba as the 2016 Sol Kanee Lecturer.

Dr. Oscar Arias
1987 Nobel Peace Laureate
President of Costa Rica 1986-1990, 2006-2010

Seeking the Hero of Heroes: Human Development as the Key to Peace

With violence dominating our headlines and growing xenophobia fueling new populist movements, it is easy to lose confidence in humanity’s ability to achieve progress – but the choice between violence and nonviolence is ours to make. The unprecedented resources of the international community are sufficient to address the poverty that sparks the flames of violence, if we prioritize peace over profits.

Wednesday, September 28, 1:30 pm @ University Centre, University of Manitoba.

The Lecture is Free and Open to All!

Sponsored by the Richardson Foundation, the Mauro Centre presents the Annual Sol Kanee Lecture Series featuring distinguished leaders in the field of peace and justice.

The lecture series is named in honour of a prominent Canadian citizen—Sol Kanee (1909 - 2007), who was devoted to the cause of peace and justice. Mr. Sol Kanee had an unparalleled record of service to Winnipeg, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1977.

Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the atomic bomb fell on her home city of Hiroshima. She soon developed cancer from radiation exposure. While receiving treatment in the hospital years later, she learned about an ancient Japanese legend that claims anyone capable of folding one thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish by the gods. Eager to experience a more peaceful world, Sadako immediately set to work. She eventually made more than 1,300 origami cranes to fulfil her wish for peace, before passing away at the age of 12. Today, Sadako’s story has become an inspiration for those who wish to live in peace and harmony.

In honour of Sadako and the millions of others affected by violence, join us in the beautiful Stuart Clark Garden of Contemplation for Making Hope. In this hands-on activity, we will explore how origami cranes have become an international symbol of peace and hope. In episode one, the six travelers begin their journey in heart of Canada; Winnipeg, Manitoba. Here they meet prominent Indigenous activist Michael Redhead Champagne who sheds some light on the road ahead. In Winnipeg their journey includes working alongside two community driven movements; the Bear Clan patrol which works to keep Winnipeg's notorious North End streets safe, and Drag the Red which takes on the sobering task of helping to solve cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women by searching the river, and the riverbank, for remains or other evidence. From Winnipeg the group travels over 2,000 km north to the remote Inuit community of Kimmirut where they discover life on the land is more intense than they ever could have imagined.

Series overview: Most Canadians have never taken the time to get to know Indigenous People or visit their communities. First Contact takes six average Canadians, all with strong opinions about Indigenous People, on a unique 28-day journey into Indigenous Canada. Leaving their everyday lives behind the six will travel deep into Winnipeg, Nunavut, Alberta, Northern Ontario, and the coast of BC to visit Indigenous communities.

Narrated by host and social justice activist George Stroumboulopoulos, First Contact is a journey that will turn the six participants' lives upside down. Challenging their perceptions and confronting their opinions about a world they never imagined they would see. It is an experience that will change their lives, forever.

In episode two, The group arrives in Muskrat Dam, one of several fly-in reserves in Northern Ontario. Most Canadians don't understand why people continue to live in remote places like this one. During their stay the group will learn why relocating isn't an option for the people whose families have been here for generations. They will also learn tough lessons about educating youth in a remote fly-in community, the impact of the legacy of residential schools, and how it is possible that clean drinking water is an issue here and in 140 other reserves across the country. The next stop takes the travelers deep into the heart of Alberta. With a population of over 17,000, Maskwacis has a reputation for gangs, crime, and a high suicide rate, but by the time this leg of their journey is over, the six will have attended their first Pow Wow and sweat lodge ceremony, and some attitudes within the group begin a major shift.

A Brown Bag Lecture with Dr. Jonathan Black-Branch, Dean of Law and Marcel A. Desautels Chair in Private Enterprise and the Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba.

The 2017 Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons marks an important milestone in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament law. It highlights growing support for decisive action against nuclear destruction, firmly asserting that nuclear weapons actually threatens global security and does not to protect it; contrary to what was traditionally argued under deterrence theory. Nevertheless, despite unprecedented support to ban nuclear weapons, the Treaty itself lacks international consensus. Some States adamantly oppose the Treaty, refusing to endorse its coming into legal force and question its legitimacy on a global front and seek to undermine its credibility as an arms-control Treaty.

Despite these apparent draw-backs, Professor Black-Branch argues that the Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons represents a significant paradigm shift in the international community. It is a game-changer, disrupting conventional thinking on nuclear security and the manner by which politicians, diplomats and international lawyers alike approach non-proliferation, disarmament and the regulation of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in a changing global community.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPivaI8-dvc

Missed watching First Contact? Want to watch again?  All episodes including the two-part reunion special will be available online as of September 17.

Most Canadians have never taken the time to get to know Indigenous People or visit their communities.

Narrated by host and social justice activist George Stroumboulopoulos, First Contact is a journey that will turn the six participants’ lives upside down. Challenging their perceptions and confronting their opinions about a world they never imagined they would see. It is an experience that will change their lives, forever.

The World Is My Country - Documentary

Date: Sunday - October 6, 2019
Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Canadian Museum for Human Rights, 85 Israel Asper Way, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0L5

The documentary focuses on World Citizen Garry Davis, a life-long peace activist whose bold actions were instrumental in the unanimous acceptance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Davis, a Broadway comedian and B-17 bomber pilot compelled by the pain of war to give up his national citizenship, embarks on an audacious mission to rise above nationalism, heal the wounds of war, and prevent World War III. With a single act of courage, this song and dance man sparks a huge people-power movement that draws Albert Einstein, Albert Camus and a cast of thousands into an amazing journey that Martin Sheen calls “a roadmap to a better future.”

Human rights lawyer David Gallup will introduce the film and lead an interactive discussion afterwards about the world citizenship movement and World Citizen Clubs. Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Online - Facebook

This event is EDT time

In the last couple of years, there has been a push by artists and activists to have Emancipation Day — the day that Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1843 — recognized as an official holiday.  To celebrate International Day of Peace, Welcome Collective is collaborating with POP Montreal and Emancipation Arts to shine a light on this effort by hosting an online panel to discuss the importance of Emancipation and Peace. The discussion will be facilitated and led by Ngozi Paul who is an award winning stage and screen actress, writer, director and producer who is committed to telling stories from an Afro-centric perspective through her socially and culturally innovative work. The artists and activists on the panel will discuss what emancipation means for them, how they are fighting for it and embodying it through their art and their activism, and how we can all embody these values in our own lives.

Living Together in Times of Pandemics - French

Date: Friday - September 25, 2020
Time: All Day
Location: Online - ZOOM

This event is EDT time

This webinar will address the notion of “living together” in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the possibility of rehabilitating this idea, one which has been overlooked by more than 15 years of identity debates in Québec. We will propose several points of discussion on lockdown and re-opening in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic as a potential for rethinking the social bond. First, we will examine the political models of planning for living together adopted by different States. Secondly, we will attempt to ask how living together matters from a societal perspective and to question the role of cities in rebuilding social ties. Finally, we will propose an exploration of situations and concrete solutions for imagining life after the pandemic.

Inclusion in the contemporary art ecosystem: realities and needs

Date: Tuesday - October 6, 2020
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Online

French - EDT time

Recent events have shaken up the status quo in the contemporary art ecosystem and call for a greater awareness of the biases, individual and collective, associated with systemic racism, as well as an understanding of their genesis.

The duty to consult is of importance, and this is therefore the mission of this discussion panel, which will first aim to discuss these realities, leading to the identification of the needs behind the instigation of truly inclusive practices in the field of contemporary art. Subsequently, this conversation will allow the setting up of initiatives helping to grow and improve the visibility and place offered to contemporary art players from diverse backgrounds.

The panel, presented by Résidence, will bring together a variety of actors of the contemporary art ecosystem, such as Cheryl Sim, Ph. D., Curator and Managing Director at PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art in Montréal; Diane Gistal, researcher, independent curator and founder of the Montréal organization celebrating Afro-descendant cultures and history Nigra Iuventa; visual artist Stanley Février, who was recently awarded the Prix en art actuel du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, as well as visual artist, curator and galerist Rad Hourani.

CANCELLED - 8th Annual Rotary Elementary School Peace Walk

Date: Friday - September 17, 2021
Time: 9:30 AM
Location: In- Person or independently in their school community

Due to the deep concern for our children being in contact with a carrier of covid, the Rotary Elementary School Peace Walk planning committee has made the difficult decision of cancelling this year’s walk. In lieu schools will recieve a brand new video that was filmed in the CMHR with two exceptional elementary school students talking about the impact of the residential schools. The video will be an excellent tool to help schools plan events for Peace Days within a framework of Every Child Matters and the upcoming Orange Shirt Day on September 30th.

Rotary Club of Winnipeg Peace Builder Committee in collaboration with Rotary 5550 World Peace Partners, CCUNESCO, Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and Manitoba Education are organizing the 8th Annual Rotary Elementary School Peace Walk. This year’s theme ‘Every Child Matters’ is significant in teaching our children the power of using their voices in the promotion of Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. Due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic in our country, this September we are offering two ways for schools to participate in the Elementary School Peace Walk:

  • in-person in Winnipeg on September 17th at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR)
  • independently in their own school community during Peace Days Festival from September 10th to September 23rd .

Challenges and opportunities of peace, justice, conflict studies educational programs: A north-south

Date: Saturday - September 18, 2021
Time: 10:00 AM
Location: Online – Facebook live

It is nearly a decade now such a festival is being organized, and since last year it has also been shared by Montreal Rotary clubs. Please find the details of the past festival here: https://www.peacedays.ca/ You can find CRRIC's 2020 events here in this festival : https://www.crric.org/past-events/. Its webinars can be found here: https://www.crric.org/crric-video-archive/ CRRIC being an event participant in this upcoming festival, plans to arrange a webinar to hear from you directly about the challenges and opportunities in the field of peace, conflict, justice studies, since students from Bangladesh often arrive here to pursue degrees. Winnipeg is the only city in Canada, which hosts three distinct Universities that offer graduate and Ph.D. level courses in this discipline. Besides academic programs, your institution also offers practicum studies, which might be of great interest to a broader audience. On the other hand, BRAC and NSU in Bangladesh have taken important academic initiatives about the Rohingya crisis that is of interest to the Canadian audience. Our proposed event could showcase some of the cross cutting peacebuilding works.

Global Sunrise Ceremony

Date: Wednesday - September 22, 2021
Time: 7:00 AM
Location: Online

A Call has been made by the Turtle Lodge for a Global Sunrise Ceremony next Wednesday September 22, 2021. JOIN us in your area, through your way of doing ceremony, to unify as the human family, for this Global Sunrise Ceremony on the day of the Equinox! *These spiritual efforts are needed more than ever and must take the lead in our global efforts to address climate change.* We are very much looking forward to the initiation of this act of spiritual unity. We will be coming together at Sunrise to honour the Grandfather Sun and Mother Earth, seeking their guidance as Mother Earth prepares to give birth to a new life. We hope you will join us in this collective act of unity, conducting a Sunrise Ceremony in your area at your respective Sunrise, as we greet the sun in Ceremony, offering our prayers and intentions on the day of the Fall Equinox on Turtle Island (North America), in a Spiritual Call to unite Humanity. There is a spiritual light placed in every living being, visibly expressed in the sun. It is through aligning with the great forces of the sun that we seek a return to the Spirit: the guidance and strength to live the original instructions we were all given as human beings. Please spread the word and invite those in your circle to join us as we offer our prayers and do this ceremony in our own unique traditions in a collective way. We invite you to join us in this Prayer offered in Gratitude by Elder Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey and Elder Dr. Dave Courchene (Nitamabit/Nii Gaani Aki Inini) To the Great Mystery, who is known by many names, whose vision we call Creation, thank you for breathing your Spirit into Mother Earth and for bringing her to life and for imbuing all living beings with your shimmering Light. Humanity has fallen asleep and neglected our sacred duty to care for your Vision of Creation. Today we call upon the forces of the Universe, the Sun, the Stars, the Moon, and the Earth, to help awaken humanity to our original instructions. Led by the Spirit and the love we have for all our children and the land, it will be through a collective, unified approach that we will be guided to walk in a good way, and find the help we need to bring back a sacred understanding of life. It is through our humility and gratitude to the Great One and the wonders of the Great Spirit that we place all children at the centre of our efforts, united in One Love, as One Voice. In our hearts we believe in Love, the greatest force we all have, that connects us to all of Creation. We realize that as the Earth brings changes, we must change. We must all become People of the Heart. Kinanaakomigo Manitou! With gratitude to our Great Creator!
