Myrna King

Myrna was raised and received her early education in Estevan Saskatchewan.  Her family owned the White Hope Coal Mines which they sold to Saskatchewan Manitoba Coal in 1949.  Myrna is truly a coal miner’s daughter.  The family went on to own a Commercial Construction Company.  One exciting adventure in Myrna’s life was to receive the Gold Cord, Girl Guides of Canada’s highest award from Queen Elizabeth the Second in person.  Myrna also received the Governor General’s Award from Madame Sauvé.

After Myrna graduated from Estevan Collegiate Institute she moved to Winnipeg in 1961 to attend Registered Nurse Education at Grace Hospital. She married her high school sweetheart Cam in 1964 and they have lived in Winnipeg ever since.

Myrna and Cam have two children.  Their son, Major John King is a pilot in the Canadian Air Force stationed in Edmonton. He is married with three darling children ages 12, 10 and 8.  Their daughter Tannis is a Registered Professional Horse Groomer and Trainer and owns race horses.

Myrna is a Registered Nurse (Retired) with a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration and an advanced diploma in Health Services Administration. She had an exciting career of over 45 years with a major focus on Gerontology, at senior levels in hospitals, personal care homes, supportive housing and assisted living housing. Presently, she is a part time Abuse Prevention Consultant for Manitoba Health Protection for Persons in Care Office, investigating reported cases of alleged patient/resident abuse in hospitals and personal care homes.

Myrna is a past President of the Winnipeg-Transcona Rotary Club. She has transferred to the Winnipeg Club – The oldest Club in Canada and the one that made Rotary International.  She is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Benefactor and Sustaining Member.  In April of 2006 she was the Team Leader for the Group Study Exchange Team to South Korea.  She is past District 5550 Chair of the Group Study Exchange Committee which promotes world understanding and peace.  She is a true believer in ‘Peace Begins with Me’.
